My Story

It’s About the People, the Leadership, and the Journey

A lifetime spent trying to get somewhere and reach the top of the mountain, only to discover the view from the top, was not at all what I thought it would be. The passion to win and to be the best became an obsession that lead to nowhere. Until one day, I woke up and discovered it was not about the win at all. The turning point from Nowhere to Now Here. It was about the people and the amazing experience of accomplishing something great as a team. It was about the leaders who were developed and the people they got to impact. It was about the climb and the journey to the top, not the destination. Every moment and every lesson learned along the way was a gift. The real opportunity was in winning the game called “life” and making a difference. It wasn’t reflected in the scoreboard, in an award, an endorsement, or a Hall of Fame ceremony, yet it was part of the journey. The game had transformed into making a difference with people and making an impact in the world. Leaders on the softball field could become leaders of major corporations and countries. Teams and teamwork could set records, win championships and produce extraordinary results both on the field and in the boardroom and battlefield. That was a game worth playing, and it was available to everyone if they knew the secret. I had to reach the top to hit bottom and discover the secret, the game-changer. This story is about the climb, the summit, the view from the top, and the real prize.

Barbara Beckley

Insurance Expert/Professional Keynote Speaker/Women’s Group Chapter Leader

Barbara empowers women to overcome their challenges and helps them shine. Growing up in an interracial family in Chicagoland during the tumultuous 1970s imbued her with a bright inner light. This light has fueled her desire to help others. She believes people are people and that colors are there to remind us we all have filters to work through to appreciate the person underneath.

Knowing work and education were keys to success, she began working in insurance at age fifteen. Upon graduating high school, she obtained associates degrees in accounting and computerized business management, business management, and health administrative management. This landed her a job with AON Risk Services in their insurance department.

Wanting to become a better senior manager at AON, she found her true calling by joining a Toastmasters Club. Embracing the Toastmasters vision of improving communication and leadership skills, she worked her way up to becoming program quality director, providing educational opportunities for over 5500 Toastmaster’s members. The great part is Barbara is just getting started. The beginning of 2017 saw her leading the first Chicagoland Chapter of the Women’s Prosperity Network. Barbara’s motto: “You have a DIAMOND in you.” Let it shine because everyone has something special within them.

Finding Balance in Chaos – Juggling Birds

Everyone thought Jackie had it all together. Life threw her quite a few curve balls: an autism diagnosis, a new baby, four children, the death of their family pets, the illness of her parents, and then losing her job. All of this was being juggled with Jackie’s 245-pound body and a new diagnosis of narcolepsy. An unexpected muse allowed her to find the balance in her chaotic life. She stopped juggling balls and started juggling birds. The end result was a more blessed and celebrated life.
