My Story

My Story

Hidden Healer

Becoming a nationally certified lymphatic clinician was never her intention or her dream when she was sitting at her desk in the late 1980s as one of NASA’s first African American journeyman engineers in the Midwest. Sudden and abnormally intense swelling of her legs and feet, to twice their size in literally one day, would eventually change her life and the lives of her family and patients. Following a traumatic nine months of intense weight gain and medical issues, Sylvia’s swelling was formally diagnosed as primary lymphedema by the famous Cleveland Clinic shortly after the birth of her first daughter. Struggling with managing a chronically swollen body that she had inherited was a fight that made her stronger.
